Create the Confidence to Step Up and Move Up
Updated: May 23, 2020
Do any of these scenarios sound familiar?
You know you’re the right candidate for the job, but others are chosen?
You know you’re the right person for the promotion, yet you’re continually overlooked?
You know you have the best solution or product for your customer, yet you don't close the sale?
You see yourself as a leader, yet no one is following?
The disconnect may be as simple as the confidence level you bring (or don't bring) to the table. Chances are, you have the knowledge, the experience and the education; now it’s time to wow them with YOU.
By becoming a V.I.P.
Don't worry this isn't about becoming over-confident and cocky. As a matter of fact, it's just the opposite. It's about creating an authentic, positive first impression that will give both you, and your audience, the confidence to move forward.
Step One: Visible Credibility
Is the way you're currently portraying yourself convincing and believable? Do you look like someone that can solve the problem or do you look like someone that will be the problem? You have a handful of seconds to convince a prospective client or employer that you're worth moving forward. The credibility that you bring through your visual appearance is a game changer. How you show up (dress, grooming, accessories, body language) will determine if you move up.
Your first impression is your silent introduction to others. And as the adage says, you only have one chance to make a first impression. This is true. Your first impression has great impact and is long lasting, so it's important to get it right. Get it right and the chances of moving forward are great. Get it wrong and you may have just handed an opportunity to your competitor. First impressions matter.
Step Two: Instant Message (IM Statement)
Showing up is hugely important but it's not quite as simple as that. If you don't know what message you want to send, your first impression will end in confusion. Confusion leads to mistrust and mistrust leads to missed opportunities. So what are you to do? Create an IM Statement. When it come to business, what is the one thing that you really want others to remember about you? This takes a bit soul searching and insight so you may want to start with 3 words and whittle it down to the one that's a non-negotiable. Creating an IM Statement will help you increase both your confidence and the confidence of those around you. It allows you to take charge of your silent message by acting as a guide for your visible credibility. Do you want to be known as free-spirited or detail oriented? Dynamic or nurturing? You control the narrative by how you show up. Your IM Statement is your instant message and your individual mantra; the one word that defines your personal brand and image. Check out an earlier blog for more information on creating your IM Statement.
Step 3: Perception (yours and theirs):
It's important to remember that perception is the individual understanding of a situation and it will differ from person to person. Your job is to make sure that the gap between how others view you and how you view yourself is as close to closed as possible. Because when it comes to messaging, the onus is on you. What does that mean? It means that details matter. It means that a confident, consistent message that speaks clearly, is a must have. It means that you need to make sure that you are presenting yourself in a relevant, up-to-date manner. If, for instance, your hairstyle and clothing are outdated, maybe your ideas are outdated. If your shoes are dirty, maybe you don't really care about details. If you're late for an interview, maybe you're chronically late for everything. Is this your reality? Probably not, but this is where confirmation bias rears it's ugly head and, the all important, first impression can derail your goals. Your job is to take control of the details so that you're giving yourself the best possible chance to advance.
The process of creating an impactful and positive first impression and image is an investment. It's an investment of time, thought, energy, and yes, sometimes money. But here's the greatest part: it gives you a new sense of confidence. The confidence to step up to and into new opportunities, or better yet, create your own. It's an investment that you can't afford not to make.
